GEORGE SCHULMAN
BIOGRAPHY
George Schulman is a New York-based artist known for layering unconventional materials, including fabric, found objects, and 24-karat gold leaf, on his paintings. His work, which is deeply rooted in the legacies of Abstract Expressionism and Neo-Expressionism, infuses storytelling, Biblical verses, and visual tension to create immersive, textured canvases that evoke both spiritual reflection and emotional intensity.
Born in 1947, Schulman began experimenting creatively at an early age and started his formal artistic studies at the age of 9. His first collages were created in his youth, using household items like shoe polish and nail polish as well as discarded fabric, lace, buttons, and other materials collected from his grandparent's bridal and tailor shop in the Bronx.
Schulman received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts and his MFA from Brooklyn College. He has worked alongside Robert Rauschenberg, Mark Rothko, Lois Dodd, and many other prominent figures in the New York art scene. In 1973, he and Knox Martin created Theta Women, a roughly 280-foot-long mural that spanned the Cary Building on Chambers, Church, and Reade Streets in Tribeca.
Schulman's work has been exhibited in numerous museums and institutions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Guild Hall, and the Heckscher Museum of Art, among others.
