ABOUT THE ARTIST

George Schulman is an Abstract Expressionist painter and collagist born in the Bronx in 1947. He is distinguished by a layered, kinetic style he calls "Fracturing," which stems from both classical training and an early use of unconventional materials, including burlap, lace, buttons, and 24-karat gold leaf. In the 1970s, Schulman was deeply embedded in the New York art world, working as an assistant to master painter Knox Martin and managing a key SoHo art supply store, where he advised and befriended artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat. Today, Schulman continues to expand his practice from his studio in Long Island. His work has been exhibited in significant institutions, including the Whitney Museum Resource Center, the Heckscher Museum of Art, and the Nassau County Museum of Art.
